SURWEB: Collections
a brief tutorial
| SURWEB has over 180 image collections online, with over 38,000 images
available for teacher and student projects. This tutorial will be a brief
over view on how you can begin using them. |
 |
From the Homepage ( http://www.surweb.org
) select the square green icon with the butterflies...
 |
You should get a screen that looks something like:
Since there are several key points to learn to be
able to navigate the collections quickly, we will cover each one
separately.
|
|
The first thing you should notice is the
"NavBar" along the top...
|
|
This allows you to change to different areas, with in the green "collections"
area... simply click on the area you wish to go to... however, most of
the time you will just be using the collections so it defaults here.
 |
Also, note the cube and the navbuttons that appear on the left hand
side...
Clicking on the cube will always take you to the homepage, and the buttons
are color coded to correspond to the different areas of SURWEB that they
will take you to... just like the ones on the homepage.
|
| You can begin looking at a collection by simply clicking on the name
of the collection as it appears....
SURWEB only shows 10 collections at a time, in alphabetical
order, ...
|
 |
 |
but you can change to different collections by using the "Jump To"
feature at the bottom of the screen... |
| Select a collection by clicking on the name and the "Title Page" for
this collection will become visible.
The image on this title page is "clickable" as are
the words "Show me the Images for"... choosing either of these options
will take you into the collection.
|
 |
When the collection actually opens, the images become visible in a second
browser window...
 |
The images in the collection are displayed 6 to each page,
like in a photo album.
This allows you to close the current collection, and return to the green
area by simply closing the window. This feature allows you to select
images from several different collections for a single media show.
This new window can be resized to fit your
personal viewing preferences.... |
 |
Each image in the collection has some descriptive text that goes with
it, and the "image & text" option in the top NavBar will display
this text, along with the images on the page...
The "image only" option will return you to the normal view of
the collection
|
 |
Each of the images is really only a small
version of the "Real" image...
They can be enlarged by clicking on the
image...
After viewing the large image,
you can return to the collection by clicking on the image again....
|
|
(Netscape) |
Any of the images, and text that you see on your screen can be
printed from your browser, provided you have a printer connected to your
computer or lab network, by simply pushing the "Print" option in your browser
once the page is fully loaded.
|
(Microsoft IE) |
However...
The best way to use the SURWEB images is to "Copy" them to an online multimedia SURWEB show!!!

|
All the items in the SURWEB archives can be copied to the RED
Media Shows area simply by clicking the "Use in My show" button ...
After you start making copies, a counter shows up in the NavBar..
This counter will display the number of images you
have copied, ... |
|
.... it will also take you to the "Media Show" area when you are ready
to create your online multimedia show.
THE END
